Can I use this Debian derivative(?) as MY Debian
beginner's system i.e. over time install all manner
of non-music stuff for general use?

If so, how can I install for ZynAddSubFX which is not
part of the canned fare and when I tried to install
it via the package manager I got this:

You could try to rename your files to
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/violetsky_steam.list although I think it will
already exist since a system upgrade. If it is just an old
configuration file, you can just delete it.

You could try to rename your files to
